Search Engine Tips

Search engines can be a pain, but getting listed on them is a necessity for all web sites. Search engines are the Internet's Yellow Pages in a sense, and getting a listing on most of the engines listed below, with the exception of Yahoo, is a very simple task.

However, getting a listing in the Top 3 Search Result Pages of one of these engines is a little more tricky. In this tutorial we are going to explain how you can get your web site listed in these engines, as well as how to get your web site in the top of the search results. To make this section easier, we are going to break it up into 4 sub-sections:

Top 5 Search Engines:
Yahoo - Largest searchable directory on the Internet.
AltaVista - The largest search engine on the Web for pages indexed.
Lycos - Huge engine that uses a spider to index your site.
Google - Need to be listed on! It is used by other search engines to enhance results.
Open Directory - Human Edited Directory that is used on many sites' search results.

Other Major Search Engines:
Excite | Hotbot | MSN | InfoSeek | Northernlight | LookSmart | Teoma

There are many other search engines, but the ones above should be your priority to get listed on. A good listing on any of these will increase your traffic instantly. And don't forget, the meta-search engines get their results from most of the engines listed above.

So a good listing on one of these engines will also get you a good listing on the meta-engines as well. To submit your site to these engines for free, click here.
